Portugal holds a special place in my heart. It was the first country my now-husband and I traveled to together, and more significantly, it’s where we got engaged. This enchanting destination has become a cherished chapter in our love story, and we’ve been fortunate enough to visit 3 times😅. Each time, we uncovered more of its magic and charm, making unforgettable memories along the way.🇵🇹
Here are some highlights from our trips and recommendations for anyone planning their own Portuguese adventure:
The Oceanário de Lisboa: A Magical Underwater World
We visited the Oceanário de Lisboa on both trips, and it was incredible each time. This world-class aquarium is an absolute must-visit, whether you’re traveling solo, with family, or as a couple. The centrepiece is a massive central tank filled with a stunning variety of marine life, including majestic sharks that glide through the water 🦈.The adorable sea otters stole our hearts, captivating us with their playful antics🦦. It’s easy to lose track of time as you wander through this mesmerizing underwater world. They also have cable cars at the back of the aquarium and they offer to take your picture whilst you are on them, you do have to pay for them.
Pena Palace: A Fairytale on a Hill
Nestled atop a hill in Sintra, Pena Palace is a sight straight out of a storybook. The vibrant colors and whimsical architecture make it one of the most iconic landmarks in Portugal. On a sunny day, the views from the palace are breathtaking, stretching across the lush greenery of Sintra’s hills and beyond. Getting to the palace involves quite the climb, but thankfully, there are tuk-tuks🛺 available to whisk you down the steep hill after your visit. Not only is it convenient, but it’s also a fun and slightly adventurous way to end your tour of this magical site.
Mafra Palace: A Baroque Marvel
Another highlight of our trips was Mafra Palace. This grandiose Baroque masterpiece is awe-inspiring in its scale and detail. Exploring the palace’s opulent rooms and its stunning library was a truly memorable experience. It’s a fantastic day out, especially if the weather is on your side☀️. The surrounding gardens are perfect for a leisurely stroll, offering a peaceful retreat after taking in the palace’s grandeur.
Aldeia do Sobreiro: A Charming Clay Village
During our second trip, we discovered the quaint and delightful village of Aldeia do Sobreiro. This little clay village feels like stepping into another world, with its handcrafted buildings and whimsical charm. It’s a quiet and picturesque spot that feels like a hidden gem, perfect for couples or anyone seeking a unique and peaceful experience. We loved wandering through the village, marveling at the artistry and craftsmanship on display.
Portugal: A Place to Fall in Love With (and in)
Portugal will forever be intertwined with our love story, not just because of our engagement, but because of the countless beautiful moments we’ve shared there. From the fascinating marine life at the Oceanário de Lisboa to the fairytale splendor of Pena Palace, the rich history of Mafra Palace, and the quaint charm of Aldeia do Sobreiro, this country never ceases to amaze us.
If you’re considering a trip to Portugal, I can’t recommend it enough. Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, you’ll always find something new to love in this magical destination. And who knows? Maybe you’ll even create your own unforgettable love story along the way.
