Your Next Getaway: Travel To Albania

Updated: Jul 7, 2025

Sunny beach scene with straw umbrellas, clear blue sea, and sky. People relax on loungers. Distant island visible on the horizon.

So, you’ve been pondering your next getaway. Maybe someone mentioned Albania and now you’re curious. Is that even a vacation destination?

Let me clarify—absolutely yes. Albania is not just a destination; it is a hidden gem finally receiving the attention it truly deserves. As a travel agent, I have assisted numerous clients in falling in love with this Balkan beauty. I’m excited to share why Albania might just be your new favourite destination on the map.

First Things First: Where Even Is Albania?

Albania is nestled in Southeast Europe. It is bordered by Greece, Montenegro, Kosovo, and North Macedonia. It boasts a spectacular coastline along the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. That means pristine beaches that rival the Amalfi Coast, but without the hefty price tag.

Why Visit Albania?

Albania is the perfect mix of stunning natural beauty, fascinating history, affordability, and warm hospitality. Picture waking up to breathtaking mountain views, sipping espresso in charming, cobbled Ottoman-era towns, and ending your day swimming in crystal-clear waters—all without emptying your wallet.

Albania has remained under-the-radar for years. This is excellent news for you. You will encounter fewer crowds, untouched charm, and plenty of authenticity.

📍 Must-See Spots in Albania

Let’s delve into some highlights:

  • Berat – The City of a Thousand Windows: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Berat features white Ottoman houses climbing the hillside. The views, the history, the food—pure magic.

  • Gjirokastër – The Stone City: Another UNESCO gem, known for its impressive castle, quirky bazaar, and traditional architecture. It has Game of Thrones vibes—minus the dragons.

  • Saranda & the Albanian Riviera: This is where Albania truly shines. Picture turquoise waters, golden beaches, beach bars, and sunsets that look like postcards. Don’t miss Ksamil, often dubbed “the Maldives of Europe.”

  • Theth & Valbona – Northern Albania's Mountain Escapes: If you love hiking, waterfalls, and remote alpine villages, this is your paradise. The Theth-to-Valbona hike is legendary and worth every moment.

  • Butrint National Park: This sprawling archaeological site features Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Venetian ruins. Explore as if you are walking through a living history book.

  • Tirana – The Capital With Character: Tirana is characterised by colourful buildings, buzzing cafes, and a quirky arts scene. It’s a fantastic spot to start or end your adventure.

When’s the Best Time to Go?

If you want warm weather and beach time, late May to early October is ideal. July and August are sun-soaked but can get hot and busy, particularly along the coast.

If you prefer milder temperatures and fewer crowds, spring (April–June) and early fall (September–October) are perfect. The mountains also shine in summer if you want to escape the heat.

Two people walk down stairs towards a turquoise bay with boats. Hills and buildings in the background under a partly cloudy sky.

💶 Currency & 💬 Language

  • Currency: The local currency is the Albanian lek (ALL). Euros are accepted in some tourist areas, but it’s best to carry leks for local purchases.

  • Language: Albanian is the official language, but many younger Albanians speak English, especially in tourist areas. You’ll always find friendly locals willing to help, even if it involves some creative gestures!

Albania offers numerous activities. Here are some favourites:

  • Beach-hop along the Riviera
